Environmental sustainability
We all understand the logic of living within our means: If we spend our wealth faster than it can be replenished, it's only a matter of time before bankruptcy ensues. Living sustainably means living within our means.
The Earth's elements and associated ecosystem are humanity's stored wealth, our "savings". The inhabitants of planet Earth have lived, until recently, more or less happily and sustainably for many thousands of years.
Humans as a race, are currently living beyond our means: For example, it has been calculated that we are using fossil fuels at roughly 200 times the rate at which they were created! Fresh water is becoming such a scarce resource, even in regions of relatively high rainfall, that some communities have resorted to building ludicrously resource wasting fresh water machines.
"Embracing sustainability is the only option for the continuing survival of the modern world."
Humans have become so enamoured with our own "knowledge" and "cleverness", that ironically and paradoxically, we are using it to destroy the very paradise which has produced and sustains us.
Is it possible live comfortably and sustainably?
By adopting a range of measures, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, forest protection and waste reduction, the burden on the environment can be reduced, quality of life improved, and legacy of a healthy, resource rich environment as a can be left as a legacy for out childrens continued health an prosperity.
